MLM and SEO. Bad Business! No Business!

Joe Balestrino asked:

MLM has been around way before the Internet. It is a few steps above a chain letter. Well, maybe more then a few steps. MLM has paved the way for people to have their own business. It can start out as side money and flourish into a very profitable business.

Now, you are probably saying to yourself “Joe, what do you know about MLM?” Well, folks in the early days I did MLM. Yes, I am a not proud of it. Not because it’s MLM but, because I wasn’t any good at it. Thank goodness though. I may not have found my calling in SEO if I did. What I am trying to say is…MLM is hard. Nowadays, they try to make it easier by offering you a cookie cutter site. What? A cookie cutter site? Isn’t that bad SEO? YES! MLM in their attempt to help their down-line are actually making it harder. You want to spend more time promoting your site by:

Writing content Testimonials Recommendations Providing tips about the items or products ..and so on.

MLM companies force you to throw more of your hard earn money into advertising. If you know the name of a well established MLM company type it into Google. What you get is dozens of sites. Many of them are the same exact site dominating over the others. It is usually the companies own site. Generating leads that YOU will have to pay to get. While your cookie cutter site fights for spots on Google adwords. Which by the way YOUR MLM has the top 3 positions. So, how do you win? Create your own web site. Find keywords related to what you sell and not the company name. If you cannot do that then create a blog. Place tips, recommendations, and testimonials and so on in your blog. Do your own Google campaign. Find message boards, blogs and websites that have interests in what you sell. You can even do a link exchange with other blogs.

Until MLM companies’ see how valuable SEO is to the success of their business and yours you can never be successful. They will always tell you about the successes and never the failures. It is true it takes money to make money. But, if the main company corners the market on leads how can you ever make it ahead? Go door to door?

Take matters into your own hands. Or, better yet. Demand your up-line provide you with a better way to achieve your goals. They are profiting from all your hard work. So, let them help you as much as possible. If that doesn’t work take matters into your own hands. The worst you can do is make things better.

Secret Tip for Multi-level Marketing Success

dwaser asked:

Do you want a secret tip that your Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) upline won’t divulge? Your MLM business won’t make you financially successful beyond your wildest dreams. Actually, not a single MLM program will make you a multi-millionaire.

So what is the real secret to financial success? You must have multiple streams of income. Join many different MLM programs and ensure that your programs make up an easy-to-work-with mix that will make you closer to your financial goals. Your multiple income streams accumulate wealth and as long as you’ve set them up to be fully automated, you only have to do work up front and they bring in money. Sure, you will still have to work on them to maintain them and tweak them a little, but the bulk of the work is done first and you enjoy the benefits later with minimum effort.

Obviously, if you don’t automate your multiple income streams, you won’t have enough hours in the day to make it, no matter how hard you work. The easiest and fastest way to create such automation is by using Internet-based MLMs. The Internet lets you create virtually everything hands-free. You can automate the way you generate your leads, follow-up with your leads, recruit your downline, etc.

You’ll need to build a marketing system, create a promotional strategy and build a website, which will be used to gather contact information from your leads and put this information into your automated conversion machine. You only have to write one email template and all leads will automatically receive it as soon as they opt-in to receive your follow up email.

Automation works every second of the day, when you’re sleeping, away on vacation and even when you’re working on something else. Do you now understand the possibilities associated with building multiple automated businesses? Duplicate your successful systems and all of your businesses can be successful. This is the way to go about building multiple income streams through MLM programs. Earning this cumulative income is the secret to becoming financially successful, no matter how you define it.

How to Make Money Online

Liam Kalish asked:

Internet income is portrayed to be very easy but yet it can be a little frustrating at times for the beginning webmaster. Before getting into how to make money online it’s important to know that once set up, internet income can be somewhat passive but until then it will require diligent, disciplined patience. As you progress with your online venture you’ll see the numbers will slowly pick up but just like anything else in life it will not happen over night. Many have succeeded in earning online income through a variety of ways but this article deals mainly with what is believed to be the most passive, convenient form, affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing has earned its reputation as the easiest method because it requires the least effort. In affiliate marketing a product already exists and all you have to do is match it with the people who are seeking that specific product. You have no involvement with keeping track of inventory, customer service or product/material development. All the tools are provided and it’s your goal to utilize them to the most efficient degree. Opportunities vary and some may require an initial capital investment while some don’t. Also, sometimes even the ones that do will allow you to try it out risk free before you dive right in with a substantial investment so it’s always best to pick what’s right for you.

While it does require a quality opportunity or product, affiliate marketing is typically a numbers game. For example if you found a lost dog and you wanted to return him to his owner you would somehow make it known. You would hand out flyers, post ads, notify community centers etc. and at the end of the day, the more you do the more results you’ll have. The same applies to affiliate opportunities because the more avenues you provide for people to access your efforts means more chances of success for you. The same way it would take you a lot of time and effort to get your “dog campaign” started it will require a decent effort to launch your online business venture. Once set up, you’re truly good to go with a passive way to earn money but until then, be patient. The important thing to remember though is that until you put in the work you will not see the rewards.

When learning how to make money online with an affiliate program it’s important to have a contributing sponsor, or coach. Whoever refers you to an opportunity must take on the huge responsibility of molding you into what you will become so be sure to consider who you’ll be working with once you’ve registered. The most successful entrepreneurs are the ones that are provided with the most tools needed to get the job done. In addition to resources, resourcefulness on your part will be crucial as well. There have been many “mlm dropouts” who just choose not to take advantage of the tools and resources being provided and unfortunately there’s nothing anybody can do about that.

Learning how to make money online can prove to be extremely lucrative and fruitful but can also require work. Consider all options carefully and don’t give up no matter what. You never appreciate how close you are to achieving a goal until you have to start from the beginning all over again so keep at it no matter what. Also, feel free to contact me with any questions at anytime as my contact info is in my profile.

Setting Your Sights to Make Money Online

Richard asked:

More Earn Money Online Tips

With the huge growth on the internet for making money you would think that the online market would become saturated with affiliate programs, MLMs and other business opportunities. This will never happen, because new people are discovering the internet everyday. Besides this people die, are born, become of age, start new careers, and so on; so the market is never saturated for any business as one may think. On the internet thousands of people attempt trying to make money on the internet. Sadly just as many will give up and many of them are the type that think it is an easy way to earn money because of the way the internet operates as a convenience to find information, buy products and offer services.

Sure it is easier to build a business on the internet but the competition is fiercer than what it is for a brick and mortar business that may be strategically located so that customers are forced to purchase from it due to no other business in the same area. For example here: If you were the only gas station in a 100 mile radius of course people would buy gas from you before continuing on their journeys.

On the internet it is a whole different ball game because if the visitor does not like your price, the color of your website, or even the type of products you are selling, a click of the mouse is all it takes to go find another store selling the same goods or better. That is one of the biggest obstacles everyone faces when trying to make money online. That is the huge Choice everyone has! The same goes for a business opportunity MLM or service. If the person finds someone else or a better program with more service, tools, and support it is goodbye to you!

Is there hope for you to make money Online?

Most certainly yes!! However when you set your sights on earning an extra income or even achieving the dream of working at home like all these programs promise, you need to be aware of some points we mention below:

Your must be determined to make your online business work!

You must give it at LEAST 3 months or more to start seeing the first Dollar come in.

You must learn how to promote your business extensively by any means possible.

You must build relationships with your customers/members/visitors.

You must deliver high standards that are competitive to your niche.

Your Website/domain/ online Store must be user friendly to visitors.

You must focus on one business maximum two at a time.

You must set realistic goals for yourself no matter what the program or opportunity promises. What works for Jack may not work for Jill!!

There are a few other things to consider but you will discover them on the way. Learning how to drive traffic to your website or online store/product can be extremely frustrating as well. There is a ton of useful and useless info on how you can do this so use your common sense.

What Type of earning opportunity online is right for me?

Try and do a little research into what the possibilities are to make money on the internet. If you join something that you like you are far more likely to make a success of it. Do not let anyone bully you into any offer. Rather check it out from all angles first. There are certainly some incredible opportunities out there and some are genuinely limited to a certain amount of memberships though it is also a selling point for others. No matter how old or young you are with a bit of savvy and patience the potential of earning money on the internet is huge. Like any business on the planet; if you are not prepared to go all the way with it, then rather leave it entirely!

How to Make Profit in MLM – 5 Tips to Success

Vincent Yee asked:

You have the best presentation website from the company, out of this world compensation plan and incredible training package that enable you to grow your business. Guess what, that is no big deal. If you want to make profit in MLM (multilevel marketing), there are five important things you must know.

First, people buy to solve their problems. Do not expect a “Yes” from every prospect you approach. Not everyone is interested in whatever you are doing. If you cannot solve their problem, they will never look for you again. If they are not interested, then move on.

Second, not everyone has the same goals, passions and focus. Most people are demoralized after a few rejections and dwell on a rejection far too long. Therefore, there is no progress in the business. Whatever the outcome, you cannot control it. So why bother? Remember, your prospects choose which direction to go. They can either choose to join you in creating a better team and earn extra income or stay as they are.

Third, do not expect any success overnight. You can see what most successful people had gone through in any MLM. They do not achieve their goals overnight. Many successful people got to the place they are at right now after years working on the business. They have experienced countless rejections and pains but they get up, dust their shoulder, and ride again. They continued until they found the one and repeated the cycle.

Fourth, 95% of the people involved in MLM, quit too soon or too easily. Frankly, many people give up half way and start crying hype. When you asked them what they did to grow their business, you will be surprised with their answers. Many quit because they cannot afford to loose more time and money before they start earning. If you really believe in the system and the business, you would be able to find a way to be successful. This is business, not charity.

Fifth, follow the system. Many new network marketers are very excited about their ventures. They want to do on their own way and style. But they could be missing is the right way of doing this business. This is a team business. You cannot standalone and work for yourself. In the end, they probably spend too much money and time on something that does not work.

If you want to make profit in MLM, you must remember five tips above. They are not the only formula to be successful. But proven to be the top reasons people cannot be successful without it. Now go out and make your own stories. Let it be a successful one.

Keys to Success for MLM Prospecting in the Cold Market

Colin Meunier asked:

Copyright (c) 2008 Colin Meunier

Multilevel marketing is an effective and good way of earning money. But the truth be told, the failure stories of multilevel marketing are too many to ignore, though everyone always talks about the success stories of MLM.

There are of course, two ways to do anything – the right way and the wrong way. Of course, you will be successful if you do things the right way, but heaven help if you do things the wrong way.

Every aspect of MLM is important, right from you deciding on which MLM to join, to search for other members for the MLM. This process, called as prospecting is the actual make or break factor of your MLM profession.

So, you have signed up a good MLM program, have already convinced your family and friends into joining the MLM and everyone around you is earning money from the MLM, all thanks to you. But what after this? Would you stop yourself at only your family and friends in your MLM business when an entire world is available for you to prospect?

Prospecting for your MLM business in the cold market is much different than pitching the MLM to your friend or family member. When you pitch the MLM opportunity to your family and friends, you have a long time relation as support, but it is a completely different matter in the cold market, where you are just another person speaking about just another opportunity to earn money.

Here are some tips you should keep in mind while prospecting for your MLM in the cold market.

Do not Exaggerate: How would you react to a man who comes to you in a bar and tells you about a plan that could make you earn ten million in ten days? To ensure that what is going in your mind does not go on in the mind of your cold market prospect, do not exaggerate. Tell them all the facts, and the risks involved, without any fluff.

Do not be Hyper: Enthusiasm is good, but too much of enthusiasm may look like desperation. Not everyone shares everyone’s passion for the good life and to earn money. And in no circumstances should you hound a person for the MLM opportunity.

Have an Open Ended Conversation: Nothing impresses a person like the ‘Call me if interested’ line. It also creates an atmosphere of a very confident person showing a plan to a very intelligent decision maker.

These and other suggestions will ensure that you have a successful time prospecting your client in the cold market. However, you should remember the one important thing you need to prospect successfully in the cold market – confidence.

All the above tips would require to be confident about your business and your MLM plan. The best way to be confident about your MLM plan is to know for sure that your MLM plan will actually work. Once you know the facts about your MLM plan, you will only be able to persuade people about your MLM business.

The Fine Line Between MLM and Pyramiding

Ronald Hudkins asked:

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia “Multi-level marketing (MLM) businesses (also known as “network” or “matrix” marketing) function by recruiting salespeople to sell a product and offer additional bonus or sales commission on the volume of other salespeople they recruit, commonly known as their “downline”. New joiners may be required to pay for their own training / marketing materials, or to buy a significant amount of inventory. Thus it is possible that an MLM may be considered a pyramid scheme if salespersons are more concerned with recruiting a downline or if they must buy more product than they are ever likely to sell.”

The encyclopedia further goes on to state, “A commonly adopted test of legality is that MLMs follow the so-called 70% rule which prevents members “inventory loading” in order to qualify for additional bonuses. The 70% rule requires participants to sell 70% of previously purchased inventory before procuring new orders. There are however variations in interpretations of this rule. Some attorneys insist that 70% of purchased inventory should be sold to people who are not participants in the scheme, while many MLM companies allow for a significant part of the sales of a participant to be to themselves for their own use.”

A pyramid scheme they go on to state is “a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, usually without any product or service being delivered. It has been known to come under many guises. Pyramid schemes are illegal in many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Malaysia, Norway, Australia , New Zealand, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Iran. Where these types of schemes have existed for at least a century.”

The Federal Trade Commission cannot tell you whether a particular multilevel marketing plan is legal. Nor can it give you advice about whether to join such a plan. You must make that decision yourself. However, the FTC suggests that you use common sense, and consider these seven tips when you make your decision:

1. Avoid any plan that includes commissions for only recruiting additional distributors. It may be an illegal pyramid.

2. Beware of plans that ask new distributors to purchase expensive inventory. These plans can collapse quickly — and also may be thinly-disguised pyramids.

3. Be cautious of plans that claim you will make money only through continued growth of your “downline” — the commissions on sales made by new distributors you recruit — rather than through sales of products you make yourself.

4. Beware of plans that claim to sell miracle products or promise enormous earnings. Just because a promoter of a plan makes a claim doesn’t mean it’s true! Ask the promoter of the plan to substantiate claims with hard evidence.

5. Beware of shills — “decoy” references paid by a plan’s promoter to describe their fictional success in earning money through the plan.

6. Don’t pay or sign any contracts in an “opportunity meeting” or any other high-pressure situation. Insist on taking your time to think over a decision to join. Talk it over with your spouse, a knowledgeable friend, an accountant or lawyer.

7. Do your homework! Check with your local Better Business Bureau and state Attorney General about any plan you’re considering — especially when the claims about the product or your potential earnings seem too good to be true.

There are millions of people worldwide that desire to have their own businesses however, do not have the initial start up capital for a storefront, inventory or funds to compensate for sustainability issues. A great way to test your individual ability to operate and succeed in a home based business is to find a great (legitimate) MLM opportunity. But, like any business you venture into be smart about your choices.

My personal recommendation is to know yourself first. If you are not a take action, persistent, motivated and confident person, I wouldn’t recommend starting your own business. You’d best serve yourself working for someone else willing to pay you for your physical or mental abilities. A business doesn’t sell itself and there is a lot more to success then just wanting to open the retail doors.

If you have the confidence but limited finances, put one toe into the business world at a time to see what you are made of. Find an MLM program that offers training, mentorship, products, services, WebPages, pre fabricated advertising mediums, advertising sources, customer support and that process, ships and delivers their own goods and services. You would be best served with a program that does not require purchase of large amounts of their inventory.

The trick here is to glean all the experience necessary to succeed in sales. Like it or not every business requires sales, customer and employee coordination, advertising budgets, book keeping and a whole lot of other coordination’s to succeed. Don’t let your desire to be an independent success get ahead of your business abilities. There are many thousands (by now millions) of people running successful home business. You can too, just don’t let yourself get railroaded into the MLM programs out there that require high start-up investments.

MLM Ethics

Dr Robin Rushlo asked:

Are MLM/Network Marketing Businesses A

Honest Way to Earn Income?

The MLM/Network Marketing Business

MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) is based on the concept of distributing the process of selling onto independent businesspersons. Honest MLMs give everyone (and anyone) the opportunity to start and grow their own business. Consider that the MLM concept can be applied to selling every good and/or service, and that every person is a potential future representative. One can say that everything has the potential to become a MLM opportunity.

Think about where you work. Isn’t it true that the boss (or company) is raking in the big bucks out of the money YOU are making for the company? Maybe you aren’t in sales. You still contribute something of value to the company. If you didn’t, they wouldn’t pay you! Your paycheck is a reflection of that value. Whether you work in sales, for a nonprofit, or in the service industry, somebody somewhere is making money and you are contributing to that effort. If they weren’t making money, the company would collapse.

There are many good examples of traditional businesses that function very much like a MLM. Examples include the Insurance business, the Yellow pages guys, your local Auto Dealers, etc. Look at a sales force. The salesman makes a commission of 12%. That’s all he makes unless he makes his quota or sale goals and then he may get a bonus. The sales managers for these companies may have 10 salespeople to train, keep track of, and motivate. As reward for this extra work, he makes 3% of everything that each salesman makes plus commissions and bonuses for his own effort. He may make an additional bonus for all of his salesmen making their sale goals. And the owner of the company makes money on everyone!

Gee, that would mean Honest MLM is everywhere we just do not see it like a MLM company.

An Honest MLM versus a Pyramid Scheme?

Pyramid schemes are illegal scams involve a large number of people at the bottom of the pyramid, all of them paying money to a few people at the top. Each new participant pays for the chance to advance to the top and profit from cash paid by others who join down the line. You receive no products or services for your participation. Pyramids resemble a legal honest MLM in structure, but there is an important difference. Pyramid schemes seek to make money from you, while multi-level marketing seeks to make money with you by offering top quality products and/or services. Pyramid schemes are much like chain letters; they require mathematical gymnastics that cannot possibly work. Pyramids always collapse in the end, and only a very few (usually the con artists themselves) make any money on them at all.

Many people associate the MLM technique with pyramidal schemes. An MLM does not work this way. You must do work to earn money—it is as simple as that. The main objective of an MLM is to enlarge the area of distribution for different goods by involving as many people as possible, either as customers or as possible representatives. Each company representative earns their money through honest work. They may receive commissions for selling and may also receive a bonus for offering the business opportunity to others.

Anyone who works a conventional job is in a pyramid scheme. Every company, army, and government in the world is built on the pyramid concept. However, with multilevel marketing, you aren’t held back by the people above you like you are in a conventional job.

With an MLM, you can build your business as large and as profitable as you want and you do not need to be at the top. In fact, with many MLMs, you can surpass the earnings of the person that introduced you to the business.

How Can You Tell if an MLM is a Good and Honest Company?

MLM opportunities are all around us, but only a few of them are turned into profitable businesses. Be sure to make the most out of every honest MLM opportunity.

The Direct Selling Education Foundation suggests that, before you sign up with a company, you ask yourself these three questions:

1) How much am I required to pay to become a distributor? An honest MLM company will generally charge a small start- up fee. Pyramid schemes make most of their money from signing up new distributors, so their start-up charges are often very high. These start-up fees may be called many things and you may be told they are required or are recommended purchases for training, computer services and product inventory.

2) Will the company buy back unsold inventory? Honest companies will usually buy back any products that you fail to sell. Bogus companies will stick you with the inventory.

3) Are the company’s products sold to customers? Pyramid schemes gain nothing by actually selling a product and often don’t sell anything at all. They focus only on gaining new investors. Be wary if you must start by buying a large amount of product. Also, take a good look at the product itself. Multi-level marketing depends on quality products that are well-priced; pyramid schemes do not.

As with any other investment, before you commit ask questions about the company, its leadership, its ethics and its earnings. Take your time and investigate any information you’re given. Talk to other people who have joined and research the company. Don’t act hastily!

Ethics of the MLM

Many people question the ethics of MLM. They claim that the people on the top get all the benefit from the people working below them, while the people below don’t get much if anything at all. Nothing could be further from the truth! The main income for an honest MLM comes from selling goods or services. With an honest MLM, you can easily make more than the person that brought you into the company if you put the effort into it. He gets a little bit from your sales, but you get the lion’s share. Work equals money!

An honest MLM also focuses both on sales and on recruiting people (increasing the distribution system) to earn you more money. When a MLM representative contacts a person, he views that person as a potential customer and as a potential future representative. A representative will give you the opportunity to purchase his merchandise (which you were going to buy anyway) and to become a representative yourself, giving you the chance to earn money, grow your own business, become part of the company and share in the profits!

The recruited person benefits since he is now part of the company and is also the owner of his own business. Some benefits of joining the honest MLM can include products at a reduced cost and the opportunity to build their own business by selling and recruiting themselves. However, recruiting alone is not enough. You must recruit, motivate, train and supply the persons you recruited to get your share of their sales profit.

I Don’t Know How to Sell or Recruit!

If you do not know how, don’t panic! There are many honest MLM guides online. All the tips, tricks and the knowledge you need to start and grow a MLM company are available. The good news is that a lot of these are free.

Expand your business over the Internet. It is easier and cheaper. People are much more comfortable buying things from perfect strangers over the Internet, rather than buying them from total stranger at their doorstep. Save time and avoid stress by doing all your managerial tasks from your computer. Recruiting can also be performed online. As can selling.

The Future of Multi-Level Marketing

The home-based business boom, also know as MLM or Network Marketing, isn’t really booming at all. Now it’s true that in the last decade the number of MLM companies popping up all over the United States have grown by over 500%. Yet, the number of distributors has only grown by 15%! So, yes there is a “MLM Boom”, but it’s the number of companies that have boomed, not the number of distributors.

What does that mean? It means that there are too many companies competing for the same distributor base, plain and simple. Ever seen a small town “boom” really quickly only to go “bust” in a few years? You know the type I’m talking about. You drive through the town and see closed businesses and shopping malls all through the town and you ask yourself “what happened here?” Now, I’m not saying that the MLM industry is ever going to “bust”.

Quite the contrary, the MLM industry will continue to grow with or without you—it’s that strong of a business model. But, it’s not 1977 anymore where Amway, Shaklee and Herbalife are not the only games in town. Instead, there are literally thousands of “good” MLM programs to choose from. To grow a profitable MLM company needs work and dedication, but once you have it rolling, you will enjoy the benefits. Grab a MLM opportunity and make your first step towards your honest MLM Empire.

The Legal Aspects of Honest MLM

The Inevitable Question

OK, you have either been recruited for a network marketing opportunity or you are the one doing the recruiting. Inevitably, this question will come up: Is this a pyramid scheme or a legitimate business opportunity?

This Tuna’s for Selling

Although this is a complex legal area, a simple story draws a clear line in the sand. Party No. 1 sells Party No. 2 a case of cans of tuna fish for $10. Party No. 2 sells the same case to No. 3 for $20 and so on until No. 9 sells the case to No. 10 for $500. No. 10 opens the case and opens one of the cans, which turns out to be rancid. He goes back to No. 9 who refers him to No. 8 and so on until No. 10 goes to No. 1 to complain.

“I have major problem,” he says.

“So, what’s your problem?” says No. 1.

“Well,” says No. 10, “the tuna is rancid, it’s inedible.”

“So, what’s your problem,” No. 1 says again

And there lies the difference. Distributors in a network marketing program that are merely buying product to buy into the deal as opposed to an intention of really making a market for it, are really working a pyramid scheme, not a legitimate direct selling business. Remember, when you offer this opportunity to your next-door neighbor or your best friend, it’s your credibility that’s going to be on the line for years to come.

What to Look for – A Checklist

So, what do you look for with respect to legitimacy vs. pyramid? Here’s a good checklist to consider.

1. Product and Price

Does the company offer a high quality product for which there is a strong demand in the real world marketplace? Is the product fairly priced and priced competitively with similar products? Can the product be demonstrated, and does it stand out when you show it to friends? Is the product proprietary to the company, and available only through its distributors? (Have you ever noticed that you can’t buy Avon products in stores or Shaklee vitamins at pharmacies?) Is it backed up with a customer satisfaction guarantee?

Is post-sales service or customer assistance available? Do the people who participate in the program buy the product enthusiastically based on its own merits, even if they don’t participate in the compensation program?

2. Second, No Investment Requirement

Can you participate in the company’s program without having to make any investment other than purchasing a sales kit or demonstration materials sold at company cost?

3. Third, Look at Purchase and Inventory Requirements

Can you become a distributor or sales representative without having to fulfill a minimum up-front purchase or inventory requirement? (When you are pitched to put thousands of dollars of inventory at the very beginning, run fast in the opposite direction.) Does the company’s compensation plan discourage inventory loading? Garages and backrooms filled with product serve no useful purpose to anyone.

4. Fourth, Look at the Sales Commissions Sources

Are sales commissions paid only on actual products or services sold through distributors in the network to the end-user or ultimate consumer? (This means that products don’t end up in basements and closets. They are used, because they have genuine value.) Does the compensation plan avoid paying commissions or bonuses for the mere act of sponsoring or recruiting? (If it pays headhunting fees, it is illegal.)

5. Fifth, Check the Buy-Back Policy

Will the company buy back inventory and sales kit materials from distributors who cancel their participation in the program, as long as these items are in resalable condition? (This policy is required in states that have adopted multilevel distribution statutes.)

6. Sixth and Very Important, Look for Retail Sales

Is there an emphasis on actual retail sales to end-consumers? Can the company demonstrate efforts to market products to the ultimate consumer? Do the company’s distributors have ongoing retailing requirements to qualify for commissions? What is a “retail sale?” The industry and many MLM statutes include both sales to nonparticipants and purchases in reasonable amounts for personal use by distributors. Some regulatory groups, including the FTC, have historically rejected personal use as a legitimate retail sale. Stay tuned as this debate continues. The legislative trend is definitely supportive of the industry position.

7. Seventh, Expect an Active and not Passive Role for Distributors

Are distributors in the company required to actively participate in the development and management of their networks? (Many of the MLM statutes require that distributors perform bona fide, supervisory, distributing, selling, or soliciting functions in moving product to the ultimate consumer.)

8. Eighth, Watch Out for Earnings Misrepresentations

Do the company’s literature and training materials scrupulously avoid claims of income potential that is promises of specific income levels other than demonstrations of verifiable income levels within its program? (The Federal Trade Commission, attorneys general, and postal inspectors all have their eyes on the matter of earnings representations. The acceptable approach emerging is that there should be no earnings representations unless they are based on a verifiable track record of the average earnings of distributors. For instance, a company should have statistics to show the percentage of active distributors and the average earnings of active distributors.)

9. Finally, Look for Good Training

Does the company offer its independent distributors solid training opportunities in sales and recruitment? Are different levels of training offered to match the increasing levels of experience and responsibilities of distributors?

MLM Training: How to Generate Your Own Qualified Prospects With 10 Proven Newspaper Ads

Tim Sales asked:

The worst thing you can ever do in your MLM business career is to think, ponder, worry or even get the idea that it’s unprofessional to promote! Here are some MLM training strategies for generating your own MLM leads, even if you’re on a tight budget.

Prospects are basically the foundation of any business, as they are the potential customers to the business. So just how do YOU find MLM prospects?

Let’s start out with a definition of the word promote, which is the most important word in finding prospects for your MLM business. The word promote means: to make known.

I was recently doing some MLM training with a person in my downline. She needed some help with her business, which was not growing. As I asked various questions I finally found the “nasty bug” that was stopping her network marketing business from moving forward. She didn’t want to come off as being or sounding sales-y. This stopped her from promoting.

HOW DOES EVERYONE ELSE PROMOTE?

A politician promotes how he/she can make a whole community’s life better; so he’s/she’s making herself known to the public by promoting and making known to as many people as possible what he/she can do for them. If you’ve noticed, politicians promote on TV, radio, signs stuck in the grass or on telephone poles along a busy street or maybe speaking at various group meetings.

A college promotes what courses it offers. It might promote on radio, might promote to high schools or through sporting events. A stockbroker promotes that he can help his/her prospect make money. A local restaurant will promote via radio, or mailing brochures or discount coupons.

THE WORST THING YOU CAN EVER DO IN YOUR MLM BUSINESS CAREER IS TO THINK, PONDER, WORRY OR EVEN GET THE IDEA THAT IT’S UNPROFESSIONAL TO PROMOTE!

You really need to know and understand promotion. The only way you can have prospects, therefore customers or distributors, is to promote. The only way for you to make money in network marketing is to promote. You can write down your dreams and goals and study them every night, but you’re as effective as a billboard in the middle of the desert. No one knows you exist until you make yourself known. So if you ever find yourself where your business isn’t growing or you don’t have enough prospects, enough customers, or enough distributors, what do you do? Promote!

WHY DO YOU PROMOTE?

The reason you promote is to create desire for your product. If you don’t create a desire for your product, it’s very difficult to achieve MLM success. How would you know that someone desires your product or business? Well certainly if you sent a postcard and someone called the number, that’s someone showing desire in your MLM Business. Even if a person called and asked, “How much is this,” it would still be someone showing desire or at least slight interest. If you called a friend and asked them to look at something and they said, “Send it to me,” that’s showing a desire. People sometimes refer to desire as “responses,” as in, someone responded to my promotion.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROMOTION

So now let’s talk about different types of promotion that create desire. You could promote your MLM Business in:

1. The Help Wanted, the Sales and Marketing or the Business Opportunity sections of a newspaper.

2. Advertising section of magazines.

3. Direct mail, such as sending out postcards to everyone in your zip code.

4. Door hangers.

5. Emails and banner ads on the internet.

6.  Networking. I’m sure you could have guessed that I would name that one. But you would be surprised at how many people, when mentioning all the ways to promote, miss that one. In fact, if you use traditional promotion with the mindset of just finding a network of people to work , you will fare far better than most who only measure their responses with how many people respond to their advertisement. You can turn one response from a promotion into thousands if you properly network.

One other place to find prospects for your business is to promote to MLM leads that you purchase from a lead company. The advantage of this is you’re only paying for those who’ve responded and you’re not paying for all the people who didn’t respond. If I send out 10,000 postcards and get 20 responses, then I paid for 9,980 post cards that didn’t get a response.

The advantage of writing your own ads of course is being able to target your specific audience with your specific product or opportunity message, which is VERY important and should not be underestimated. In contrast, when you buy leads, you’re buying general ads; perhaps people who’ve responded to wanting a home-based business. The other downside to buying leads is that very often, lead companies resell their leads to more than just you; so you’ve got extra competition to deal with.

THREE BROAD WAYS TO PROMOTE

Now it probably sounded like I just contradicted myself; I didn’t. I just saved you years of running in circles trying to figure out the advantages and the disadvantages to generating your own leads or buying leads. This is the game. You must promote. There are three broad ways to promote.

1. Networking: this costs the least. You’re going to have the costs of meals with prospects and the costs of joining clubs/associations. So I have rock climbing club fees, I have mountain climbing association fees, horseback riding fees, mountain biking fees; these are like $50-$100 dollars a year.

2. Buying leads: this is more expensive than networking, but less expensive than generating your own. It has some advantages and disadvantages: sometimes you get some hot leads; sometimes, you swear you’re calling a graveyard.

3. Generating your own: this is the most expensive, but has the advantages of targeting your prospects. Here’s a list of advertisements that I’ve run to promote my own MLM business opportunity:

* Some people earn Ten thousand dollars a year. And some people earn One million in the same year. Click here to see difference.

* Need more money; NOW!

* Does it ever break your heart to leave your kids at daycare?

* Looking for a FUN business?

* Go to the golf course when it’s not crowded.

* The truth about making money. A lot of it.

* WEALTH FORMULA. Click here (banner ads)

* Wealth formula that takes a lot of effort – but retires you in 4 years.

* Extremely well paying position available to right person. Must have sales & marketing experience. Sales training a big plus.

* Immediate Need for Effective Sales Person. Unlimited earning and growth potential. Self-starter, sales writing skills and team player will be keys to success in this growing, hightech organization. Will be responsible for generating sales leads, preparing and giving presentations on company products and training sales team for (enter your business type. Example: fitness, high-tech or health, etc.) development company. Great benefits. Great FUN TEAM! Fax resume to:

BE “IN” BUSINESS

The bottom line is you must be using at least one of these three methods to achieve MLM success. If you’re not, you’re not in business; you’re out of business. What you should be doing, if you see the big picture and want the very big income, is you need to be doing all three. All the time. Ideally you’d start out by networking, which will create enough money to buy MLM leads, then you’ll generate enough money from the leads you purchased to generate your own leads. My point is, as soon as you start making any money, reinvest it in promotion.

One other MLM training tip: don’t measure your success by just your immediate responses. Any marketer who is of any value knows that how you measure return on promotion investment is based on the “life of the customer;” NOT immediate return. Get one leader from a MONTH or 6-MONTHS of promotion and it can pay you for the rest of your life. People often ask me, how much money did you make your first year in network marketing and I tell them, “I don’t know, I’m still earning it.”

Much respect and admiration,

Tim Sales
